The Ultimate Umrah Packing Checklist for Canadians (2026 Edition)

Keywords: umrah packing list canada, what to pack for umrah from canada, umrah checklist 2026

By Sahal Umrah Travel Team · Updated April 2026 · 8 min read

Packing for Umrah is different from packing for any regular holiday. You are preparing for one of the most spiritually significant journeys of your life, and having the right items with you — and leaving the wrong ones behind — will make an enormous difference to your experience.

This checklist is written specifically for pilgrims departing from Canada. Some items (like voltage adapters and prescription medication rules) are especially relevant for Canadian travellers.

Documents (The Non-Negotiables)

  • Valid Canadian passport (minimum 6 months validity from your return date)
  • tourist visa (your travel agent will arrange this — keep a printed copy)
  • Return flight tickets — printed and digital copies
  • Hotel booking confirmations for Makkah and Madinah
  • Travel insurance documents
  • Emergency contact list (Canada & Saudi Arabia)
  • Vaccination record (meningococcal vaccine is mandatory for tourist visas)
  • For women: proof of mahram relationship if travelling with a male relative

Ihram Essentials

For Men

  • 2 sets of ihram cloth (white, unstitched, absorbent) — pack two in case one gets wet
  • Ihram belt or safety pins to secure the cloth
  • Plain sandals with no stitching over the top of the foot (according to Hanafi: regular sandals are permissible)
  • Ihram bag to keep your two cloths clean and together

For Women

  • Modest, loose abaya or jilbab — multiple sets recommended (it will be hot)
  • Prayer hijab / khimar (the Haram is crowded — have a secure head covering)
  • Face covering (niqab) is optional but many women prefer it for privacy
  • Shoe bag (included in Sahal Umrah packages)
  • Prayer mat (included in Sahal Umrah packages)

Medicines & Health

  • All prescription medications with a letter from your Canadian doctor — Saudi customs can be strict
  • Paracetamol / Tylenol (travel size) for headaches and fever
  • Antidiarrheal medication (a change in food and water is common)
  • Blister plasters — you will walk kilometres daily on marble floors
  • Unscented hand sanitiser (scented products are prohibited in ihram)
  • Unscented soap, shampoo, deodorant for use while in ihram
  • Sunscreen (SPF 50 — the Saudi sun is intense, especially in courtyards)
  • Electrolyte packets or tablets to prevent dehydration
  • N95 or surgical masks (the Haram is extremely crowded during peak seasons)
  • Prescription glasses/contacts — contact lens solution available in Makkah but expensive

Clothing (Beyond Ihram)

  • 4–5 sets of comfortable, modest everyday clothing (light cotton/linen for heat)
  • Comfortable walking shoes — not sandals — for days outside the Haram
  • Lightweight jacket or hoodie (hotels and the Haram interior are air-conditioned)
  • Small umbrella or sun hat for the courtyard (not to be worn inside the mosque)

Electronics & Accessories

  • Type G plug adapter (Saudi Arabia uses Type G — same as UK)
  • Portable power bank (essential for navigation apps in the Haram)
  • Small backpack or waist bag for daily use in the Haram
  • Zipper bags for valuables — the Haram is crowded and pickpocketing does occur
  • Nusuk app installed on your phone (official Saudi app for Umrah registration)
  • Download offline maps of Makkah before you leave Canada
  • Digital Quran or downloaded Quran app for offline use

How to Perform Umrah Step by Step — A Beginner's Guide

By Sahal Umrah Travel Team · Updated April 2026 · 12 min read

Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage to Makkah and can be performed at any time of year. Although it is not obligatory like Hajj, it carries immense spiritual reward. This guide walks you through every step of Umrah in simple, clear language — grounded in the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Note: There are minor differences in the rulings of Umrah across the four major madhabs (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali). Our guides on the ground will help navigate these. This guide follows the most widely practised method.

Step 1: Enter the State of Ihram

Ihram is the sacred state you must enter before performing Umrah. It involves wearing the ihram garments and making the intention (niyyah).

Where to enter ihram (the miqat)

If you are flying directly to Jeddah from Canada, you must enter ihram before or at the point of miqat. For most flights, this will be announced on the plane. Our guides will inform you in advance.

  • For men: wear the two white, unstitched cloths. Cover the lower body and drape the upper cloth over one shoulder.
  • For women: wear regular modest Islamic dress — face and hands remain uncovered (according to the Hanafi madhab).
  • Perform ghusl (full ritual bath) before putting on ihram garments if possible.
  • Pray two rakats of Salat al-Ihram (if not a makruh time) and then make your niyyah: "Labbayk Allahumma Umrah" — "Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah."
  • Begin reciting the Talbiyah: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka labbayk, innal hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak."

Step 2: Arrive at Masjid al-Haram

Upon entering Masjid al-Haram, enter with your right foot and say "Bismillah, Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad." When you first see the Ka'bah, it is a highly recommended time to make du'a — this is one of the moments when du'a is especially accepted.

Step 3: Tawaf (Circumambulation of the Ka'bah)

Tawaf means circling the Ka'bah seven times in an anticlockwise direction, beginning and ending at the Black Stone (al-Hajar al-Aswad).

  • Begin at the Black Stone. If possible, kiss it. If the crowd is too heavy, touch it with your hand or simply point to it and say "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar."
  • Keep the Ka'bah on your left side throughout.
  • Men should perform raml (a brisk, slightly hurried pace) during the first three rounds of tawaf — this is Sunnah.
  • Make du'a freely throughout — there is no fixed prayer for each round.
  • After completing 7 rounds, proceed to Maqam Ibrahim.

Step 4: Salah at Maqam Ibrahim

After tawaf, pray two rakats near Maqam Ibrahim (the stone on which Ibrahim, peace be upon him, stood while building the Ka'bah). Recite Surah al-Kafirun in the first rakat and Surah al-Ikhlas in the second.

Step 5: Drink Zamzam Water

Proceed to the Zamzam water stations inside the Masjid. Drink while facing the Qibla, in three sips, and make du'a. The Prophet (pbuh) said: "Zamzam water is for whatever it is drunk for."

Step 6: Sa'i between Safa and Marwa

Sa'i commemorates the actions of Hajar (may Allah be pleased with her), who ran between the hills of Safa and Marwa searching for water for her son Ismail.

  • Begin at Safa. Ascend and face the Ka'bah. Recite the du'a and make your intention.
  • Walk to Marwa — this is one lap. Then return to Safa. Seven laps total (ending at Marwa).
  • Men should jog lightly between the green lights on the Sa'i walkway (this marks where Hajar ran).
  • Make du'a throughout. There is no fixed supplication for each lap.

Step 7: Halq or Taqsir (Hair Cutting)

After completing sa'i, men should ideally shave the entire head (halq) — this is most virtuous — or shorten the hair all around (taqsir). Women cut a fingertip's length from their hair. This marks the completion of Umrah and exits you from the state of ihram.

Congratulations — your Umrah is complete. Alhamdulillah. Take time now for extended du'a, extra salah, and recitation of Quran while in the blessed presence of the Ka'bah.

How Much Does Umrah Cost from Canada in 2026?

By Sahal Umrah Travel Team · Updated April 2026 · 6 min read

One of the most common questions we receive is "how much will Umrah cost me from Canada?" The honest answer is: it depends on the season, your star rating preference, how many are travelling with you, and whether you book early. But we can give you clear, realistic numbers.

What's Typically Included in a Package Price

A reputable Umrah package from Canada should always include the following. If any of these are missing, ask why:

  • Return flights (economy class) from your nearest major Canadian airport
  • Tourist visa processing
  • Saudi VAT tax (currently 15%)
  • Hotel accommodation (in Makkah, sometimes also Madinah)
  • Daily breakfast
  • Airport transfers and intercity transport between Makkah and Madinah
  • At least one guided ziyarat tour

Current Package Prices (2026–2027)

Package Duration Per Person (double)
Winter Break Economy 12 nights From $3,850
Winter Break Gold 12 nights From $4,350
Ramadan Last 10 Nights 10 nights From $3,199

Additional Spending Money

Beyond the package price, budget for the following during your trip:

  • Meals beyond breakfast: $15–$30 CAD per day (food in Makkah is abundant and varied)
  • Gifts and souvenirs for family: $100–$300+ depending on your family size
  • Dates, Zamzam water, and prayer items to bring back
  • Pocket money for personal needs, medication, transport within the city

A conservative additional budget of $500–$1,000 CAD for 12 nights is reasonable for most Canadians.

How to Save Money Without Sacrificing Quality

  • Book early — our early bird discount saves $100 per person when you deposit before June 15, 2026
  • Travel with a group — group discounts are available for 5+ travellers
  • Avoid Ramadan and Hajj season if cost is a priority (December and January are excellent and less crowded)
  • Double occupancy pricing is standard — solo travellers pay a single supplement, which we try to minimize by matching compatible roommates where possible

Ramadan Umrah from Canada — What to Expect in 2027

By Sahal Umrah Travel Team · Updated April 2026 · 7 min read

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Umrah during Ramadan is equivalent to performing Hajj with me." (Bukhari & Muslim). This hadith alone explains why Ramadan Umrah packages from Canada fill up months in advance. If you are considering it, plan early — and this guide will help you know exactly what to expect.

The Spiritual Reward

Every good deed in Ramadan is multiplied many times. Performing Umrah during this blessed month — especially in the last 10 nights when Laylat al-Qadr falls — places you in Makkah at the most spiritually charged time of the Islamic year. Many pilgrims describe Ramadan Umrah as a life-changing experience they could not have imagined from Canada.

What Makes Ramadan Different

  • The Haram is far more crowded — especially after Maghrib, Tarawih, and Tahajjud prayers
  • The atmosphere is electric — millions of Muslims fasting and worshipping together
  • Tarawih prayers in the Haram are led by some of the world's most beautiful reciters
  • The last 10 nights (I'tikaf period) are particularly intense and spiritually powerful
  • Iftar is held in the Haram — dates and Zamzam are distributed to all pilgrims

2027 Ramadan Packages Available

  • First 10 Days of Ramadan: Feb 7 – Feb 17, 2027
  • Last 14 Nights: Feb 27 – Mar 11, 2027
  • Last 10 Nights (incl. Laylat al-Qadr): Feb 27 – Mar 8, 2027

All packages include return airfare from Canada, hotel with Suhoor, visa, VAT, and guided tours.

Practical Tips for Ramadan Umrah

  • Sleep during the day and worship at night — the Haram is quieter in early morning hours (Fajr to Dhuhr)
  • Stay hydrated during non-fasting hours — the heat is significant even in winter months
  • Wear extra layers for Tarawih — the Haram air conditioning is intense at night
  • Arrive at the Haram early before Tarawih to get a spot near the front
  • Have a clear list of du'as you want to make — you will have many hours to make them

First Umrah Tips: 20 Things I Wish I Knew Before Going

By Sahal Umrah Travel Team · Compiled from pilgrim feedback · 10 min read

We asked over 100 of our past pilgrims: "What do you wish you had known before your first Umrah?" Their answers, combined with wisdom from our guides, make up this list.

Before You Leave Canada

  1. Get the meningococcal vaccine early. It is mandatory for tourist visas and takes 10 days to become effective. Don't leave this to the week before departure.
  2. Practice walking barefoot or in sandals. The Haram marble can be slippery and hot. Your feet will ache in the first days — conditioning them helps.
  3. Download offline maps and the Nusuk app. Data can be spotty near the Haram. Having offline Google Maps for Makkah could save you from getting lost.
  4. Memorise key du'as in advance. You will be standing in front of the Ka'bah with millions of things you want to ask of Allah. Write your du'a list before you go.
  5. Bring enough Canadian dollars to exchange. The rate at Jeddah airport is reasonable. Have $300–$500 USD or the equivalent for your first day.

In the Haram

  1. The first glimpse of the Ka'bah is overwhelming. Do not rush past it. Stand still. Make du'a. Many pilgrims regret moving too quickly past this once-in-a-lifetime moment.
  2. Tawaf is not a race. The closer you are to the Ka'bah, the more crowded it is. The outer circles are less crowded and just as valid.
  3. Wear your shoes around your neck or use a bag. Shoes left at the Haram entrance often go missing. Our shoe bags are provided for exactly this reason.
  4. Mark your Haram entry point. Take a photo of the gate number you enter through — the Haram is vast and pilgrims get lost regularly.
  5. Drink Zamzam water often. It is free, plentiful, and spiritually significant. Many pilgrims drink it constantly throughout their stay.

Practical Reality

  1. It will be hot. Even in December and January, the sun and crowds generate heat. Dress in layers — cool for outdoors, warm for the air-conditioned interior.
  2. Your feet will hurt. Everyone's do. Pack blister plasters and wear well-fitted sandals for the sa'i walkway.
  3. Food is plentiful near the Haram. Al Baik (the famous Saudi fried chicken), Arabic restaurants, and international options are all within walking distance.
  4. The time zones will hit you. Saudi Arabia is 8 hours ahead of Eastern time. Give yourself 2–3 days to adjust — sleep when you can in the first days.
  5. Your phone battery drains fast. Between navigation, photos, and messaging family, you'll need a power bank. Bring one that holds at least 20,000mAh.

Spiritual Advice

  1. Protect your ihram state. Avoid arguments, impatience, and harsh speech entirely. The reward of Umrah depends on the state of your heart.
  2. Be patient with crowds. The Haram can be overwhelming. Remember that every person there is your brother or sister in Islam on the same journey.
  3. Make du'a for others. The Prophet (pbuh) said that du'a made for others in their absence is answered. Bring a list of people back home who need your prayers.
  4. Plan to stay extra time after Umrah. Once your rituals are complete, don't rush back. Sit, recite Quran, and soak in being in the most sacred place on earth.
  5. Return with a plan to maintain the change. Many pilgrims feel transformed during Umrah. Have a plan for how to maintain the spiritual momentum when you return to Canada.

A $1,000 CAD deposit per person is required to confirm your booking. If you deposit before June 15, 2026, you will also receive an early bird discount of $100 off the total package price. The remaining balance is due 60 days before departure.
What payment methods do you accept?+
We accept bank transfer (e-transfer), certified cheque, and cash payment at our office. Payment plans may be available for groups and returning clients — ask our team for details.

Beyond the deposit: cancellations within 90 days of travel forfeit $1,500; cancellations within 70 days incur a $2,000 penalty; cancellations within 50 days receive no refund whatsoever. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers trip cancellation.
Can I travel alone as a woman without a mahram?+
As of 2021, Saudi Arabia has relaxed the mahram requirement for women under 45 travelling as part of an organised group. Women over 45 can also travel without a mahram in a group. Sahal Umrah organises group departures that qualify under these regulations. Contact us to confirm the specific rules applicable to your package.

What vaccinations are required for Umrah?+
The meningococcal (ACWY) vaccine is mandatory for all tourist visas. You must provide your vaccination record. It is recommended to also have COVID-19 vaccination documentation, and to consider flu and hepatitis vaccinations, though these are not required. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before departure. Your local Canadian pharmacy or travel health clinic can administer these.
I am a permanent resident, not a Canadian citizen — can I apply for Umrah?+
Yes. Canadian permanent residents are eligible for tourist visas using their residence permit and passport from their country of citizenship. Contact us with your specific nationality and residency documents and we will advise on the application process.
What is the Nusuk app and do I need it?+
Nusuk is the official Saudi government app for managing your Umrah registration. Saudi authorities increasingly use it for permits, scheduling, and crowd management — particularly for access to the Rawdah in Madinah. Download it before your trip and register your details. Our team will guide you through this as part of your pre-departure preparation.
How long does Umrah take to complete?+
The rituals of Umrah — ihram, tawaf, sa'i, and haircut — typically take 3 to 5 hours when the Haram is not at peak capacity. During Ramadan or Hajj season, the crowds can extend this significantly. Most pilgrims spend their first full day performing their Umrah, and then use the remaining days for nafl worship, ziyarat, and personal ibadah.
Can I perform multiple Umrahs during one trip?+
Yes. You can perform multiple Umrahs on a single trip. To do so, you must re-enter the state of ihram each time — typically by travelling to the miqat (often Masjid al-Tan'im, which is close to the Haram) and making a new intention. Our guides can arrange transportation and advise on the correct procedure.
Can I perform Umrah on behalf of someone who has passed away?+
Yes, this is permissible in Islam. You must first complete your own obligatory Umrah, and then you may perform an additional one on behalf of a deceased person by making the niyyah (intention) in their name. Our scholars and guides can advise you on the correct way to do this.
What are the prohibitions in the state of ihram?+
While in ihram, the following are prohibited: cutting hair or nails, using perfume or scented products, sexual relations, covering the head (for men), wearing stitched clothing (for men), hunting or harming animals, engaging in arguments or lewd speech, and wearing gloves (for women). Accidental violations have specific kafarah (atonement) — our guides will advise you if this occurs.
Which cities in Canada do you depart from?+
We arrange flights from Toronto (YYZ), Calgary (YYC), Edmonton (YEG), and Vancouver (YVR). If you are in another city, you can join the group flight by booking a connecting flight to one of these hubs — we will coordinate your arrival time. Contact us and we will arrange the best routing for your location.
What airline will we fly with?+
We work with multiple airlines including Saudia (Saudi Arabian Airlines), Air Canada connecting to Saudia or Emirates, and other carriers depending on the departure season and best available fares. Specific airline details will be confirmed in your booking documents approximately 4–6 weeks before departure.
What should I wear on the plane when travelling to Umrah?+
Most pilgrims travel in regular comfortable clothing and change into ihram at the miqat point during the flight (the captain typically announces this). Men should have their ihram cloths in their carry-on bag for easy access. Some pilgrims prefer to wear ihram from the departure airport — both are acceptable.
Is it safe to travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah?+
Saudi Arabia is extremely safe for pilgrims. Makkah and Madinah are among the most managed and secured cities in the world, with hundreds of thousands of security personnel deployed during Umrah season. The main practical concern is crowd management — which is why travelling with an experienced agency like Sahal Umrah, with guides who know the Haram, is so important.
Will a guide be with us throughout the trip?+
Yes. A knowledgeable guide — often a sheikh or Islamic scholar — accompanies our groups from arrival to departure. They lead the rituals, explain the significance of each site, answer your questions, and are available 24/7 through our group WhatsApp. You are never left to navigate Saudi Arabia alone.
How far are the hotels from the Haram?+
Our 3-star packages place you within a 10–20 minute walk from the Masjid al-Haram. Our 5-star packages place you within 5 minutes, often steps away. All hotels include shuttle service to and from the Haram for those who prefer not to walk.
What currency should I bring?+
The Saudi Riyal (SAR) is the local currency. 1 CAD is approximately 2.75 SAR (rates vary). You can exchange at the Jeddah airport, in your hotel, or at the many exchange offices near the Haram. Bring Canadian dollars or US dollars in cash for exchange — credit cards are widely accepted but cash is useful for smaller purchases.
What SIM card or data plan should I get for Saudi Arabia?+
We recommend purchasing a local Saudi SIM card upon arrival at Jeddah airport (STC, Mobily, or Zain are the main providers — each sells prepaid tourist SIMs for approximately 50–100 SAR with several gigabytes of data). Alternatively, check with your Canadian carrier about an international roaming plan. Having data is important for maps, the Nusuk app, and staying in touch with your group.
Is there a mosque WhatsApp group for our trip?+
Yes. Every Sahal Umrah group departure has a dedicated WhatsApp group created several weeks before departure. Your guide and our office team are in the group. You will receive schedule updates, prayer times, packing reminders, and on-the-ground communications throughout the trip.
